Columbus ist die Landeshauptstadt und die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt im US-Bundesstaat Ohio. Entstanden ist die Stadt aus zahlreichen Siedlungen der amerikanischen Ureinwohner an den Ufern des Scioto River. Franklinton, heute ein Stadtteil, war die erste weiße Siedlung, die im Jahr 1797 angelegt wurde. Gegründet wurde die Stadt 1812 am Zusammenfluss von Scioto und Olentangy River und wurde als Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates angelegt. Sie ist nach dem Entdecker Christoph Kolumbus benannt.
Die Stadt hat eine vielfältige Wirtschaft, die u. a. auf Bildung, Verwaltung, Versicherungen, Finanzwesen, medizinischer Forschung, Gesundheitswesen, Gastgewerbe und Einzelhandel basiert. Die Metropolregion ist Standort des Battelle Memorial Institute, der größten privaten Forschungs- und Entwicklungsstiftung der Welt, des Chemical Abstracts Service, des weltweit größten Clearinghouse für chemische Informationen, und der Ohio State University, einer der größten Universitäten der Vereinigten Staaten.
Columbus is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. Columbus originated as numerous Native American settlements on the banks of the Scioto River. Franklinton, now a city neighborhood, was the first white settlement, laid out in 1797. The city was founded in 1812, at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, and laid out to become the state capital. It was named for explorer Christopher Columbus.
The city has a diverse economy based on education, government, insurance, banking, medical research, health care, hospitality, retail, and technology. The metropolitan area is home to the Battelle Memorial Institute, the world’s largest private research and development foundation; Chemical Abstracts Service, the world’s largest clearinghouse of chemical information and Ohio State University, one of the largest universities in the United States.

In Columbus gibt es eine große Auswahl an Museen und Galerien. Das wichtigste Kunstmuseum ist das Columbus Museum of Art, das neben dem Hauptgebäude auch die Pizzuti Collection mit zeitgenössischer Kunst betreibt. Das 1878 gegründete Museum konzentriert sich auf europäische und amerikanische Kunst bis zur frühen Moderne, darunter außergewöhnliche Beispiele des Impressionismus, des deutschen Expressionismus und des Kubismus. Ein weiteres bekanntes Kunstmuseum in der Stadt ist das Wexner Center for the Arts, eine Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst und eine Forschungseinrichtung, die von der Ohio State University betreut wird.
Columbus ist auch Heimat vieler Institutionen der darstellenden Künste, darunter das Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Opera Columbus, BalletMet Columbus, das ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, CATCO, Columbus Children’s Theatre, Shadowbox Live und das Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Zu den jährlichen Festivitäten in Columbus gehören die Ohio State Fair – eine der größten Staatsmessen des Landes – sowie das Columbus Arts Festival und das Jazz & Rib Fest, die beide am Flussufer der Innenstadt stattfinden. Mitte Mai findet in Columbus das Rock on the Range statt, das als Amerikas größtes Rockfestival bezeichnet wird. Am ersten Juniwochenende findet in den Bars von Columbus‘ North Market District das Park Street Festival statt, das Tausende von Besuchern zu einer riesigen Party in den Bars und auf der Straße anlockt. Am vorletzten Juni-Wochenende findet eine der größten Gay-Pride-Paraden des Mittleren Westens statt, Columbus Pride, die die große schwule Bevölkerung der Stadt widerspiegelt. Am letzten Juni-Wochenende findet im Goodale Park das ComFest (kurz für „Community Festival„) statt, ein dreitägiges Musikfestival, das als größtes nicht-kommerzielles Festival in den USA gefeiert wird, mit Kunstverkäufern, Live-Musik auf mehreren Bühnen, Hunderten von lokalen sozialen und politischen Organisationen, Bodypainting und Bier.
Columbus has a wide variety of museums and galleries. Its primary art museum is the Columbus Museum of Art, which operates its main location as well as the Pizzuti Collection, featuring contemporary art. The museum, founded in 1878, focuses on European and American art up to early modernism that includes extraordinary examples of Impressionism, German Expressionism, and Cubism.[108] Another prominent art museum in the city is the Wexner Center for the Arts, a contemporary art gallery and research facility operated by the Ohio State University.
Columbus is the home of many performing arts institutions including the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Opera Columbus, BalletMet Columbus, the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, CATCO, Columbus Children’s Theatre, Shadowbox Live, and the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Throughout the summer, the Actors‘ Theatre of Columbus offers free performances of Shakespearean plays in an open-air amphitheater in Schiller Park in historic German Village.

In the middle of May, Columbus is home to Rock on the Range, marketed as America’s biggest rock festival. During the first weekend in June, the bars of Columbus’s North Market District host the Park Street Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors to a massive party in bars and on the street. June’s second-to-last weekend sees one of the Midwest’s largest gay pride parades, Columbus Pride, reflecting the city’s sizable gay population. During the last weekend of June, Goodale Park hosts ComFest (short for „Community Festival„), an immense three-day music festival marketed as the largest non-commercial festival in the U.S., with art vendors, live music on multiple stages, hundreds of local social and political organizations, body painting, and beer.

Columbus unterhält einen weit verbreiteten städtischen Busdienst, die Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA). Der Dienst betreibt 41 Linien mit einer Flotte von 440 Bussen, die etwa 19 Millionen Fahrgäste pro Jahr befördern. The service operates 41 routes with a fleet of 440 buses, serving approximately 19 million passengers per year. Bereits 1994 legte das Sächsische Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst zusammen mit dem Greater Columbus Arts Council in Ohio, USA den Grundstein für ein überaus erfolgreiches internationales Austauschprogramm, in dessen Rahmen jedes Jahr zwei US-amerikanische Künstlerinnen und Künstler nach Sachsen kommen und im Gegenzug zwei sächsische Künstlerinnen und Künstler nach Columbus im Bundesstaat Ohio entsandt werden. Seit 2012 ist das Programm Teil der internationalen Stipendienprogramme der Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen.
Already in 1994, the Saxon Ministry of Science and Arts, together with the Greater Columbus Arts Council in Ohio, USA, founded an exceptionally successful international exchange programme under which two American artists come to Saxony every year and in return two Saxon artists are sent to Columbus in the state of Ohio. Since 2012 the programme has been part of the international scholarship programmes of the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen („Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony“).
